4 Medications That Could Affect Your Child’s Gut Health

4 Medications That Could Affect Your Child’s Gut Health

Be honest.  You’re wondering why everyone is gluten and/or dairy-free.

Why do some people have trouble digesting these foods or others have no problem.

What if your child was able to eat these foods again, without digestive pain?

And should this be a concern of yours?

Think about this for a moment.  Your child is exposed to more chemicals and antibiotics than you ever were.

Do you ever wonder if it is affecting their health?

Here’s the thing, there are medications affecting your child’s gut health.

4 Medications that lead to Leaky Gut Syndrome In Kids:

#1 Antibiotics

#2 Steroids

#3 NSAIDs

#4 Acid reducing medication

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

“Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a digestive condition in which bacteria and toxins are able to “leak” through the intestinal wall.”

But hang on, why is this a concern for us?

When you have Leaky Gut, you are at an increased risk for food sensitivity and food allergies.

What exactly is a food sensitivity?

A food sensitivity:

  • typically causes a less severe reaction
  • they may have an ongoing/undiagnosed cough
  • usually causes digestive problems
  • your child’s skin may break-out after they eat
  • dairy and gluten may be the top sensitive foods for them

A true food allergy causes:

  • an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body
  • it can cause a range of symptoms
  • in some cases, an allergic food reaction can be severe or life-threatening
  • you would NEVER re-introduce this food into your child’s diet!!!
  • The 4R approach may reduce your child’s reaction to their allergy but you would never re-introduce the food to them again unless under a doctor’s supervision

But don’t forget, you can heal your child’s gut with the 4R approach below.

Does my child need to heal their gut? Do they have these symptoms?

  1. Chronic diarrhea, constipation, gas or bloating
  2. Nutritional deficiencies
  3. Poor immune system
  4. Headaches, brain fog, memory loss
  5. Excessive fatigue
  6. Skin rashes and problems such as acne, eczema or rosacea
  7. Cravings for sugar or carbs
  8. Joint pain
  9. Depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD, bad behavior at school
  10. Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac
  11. Chronic cough
  12. Allergies, Asthma, & Eczema
  13. Cheeks get red easily

If your child has some of these symptoms, they may have Leaky Gut Syndrome and may need the 4R approach.

How? Let me explain.

What is the 4R approach?

It’s a method that addresses the underlying causes of gut imbalances and restores harmony, helping to alleviate symptoms and maybe even disease for our children. The program suggests you: Remove> Reinoculate> Repair> Reintroduce

Healing leaky gut in child

How do you heal your child’s gut?

  • Promote healthy evacuation daily with fiber, fruit, vegetables, and water
  • Try an elimination diet for 2-3 weeks if symptoms persist, you may want to try the 4R approach
  • Remove all triggers: i.e. all allergens and cross reactors like gluten and dairy
  • Get off medications (with Dr.’s approval and replace with natural remedies )
  • Reduce your child’s stress with reading, being outside, and adding herbal teas
  • Heal their gut lining with the 4R approach below
  • NEVER re-introduce foods that cause a true allergic reaction

Keep in mind.

This program is most successful when the whole family agrees to participate. So, what are the steps?

The 4R approach for children

1. Remove

Take out what ails them

  • Remove the top allergens for your child including wheat, corn, eggs, dairy, peanuts, and soybeans.
  • Add in whole grains (like quinoa and rice), organic vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats.
  • Remove all allergens for 4-6 weeks or it may take up to a year to heal their gut with an auto-immune disease.
  • Encourage whole, organic foods if able.
  • This is the hardest part to do with small kids.  It helps if the whole house works together.
  • Plan ahead.  Print recipes, go grocery shopping, be prepared for meltdowns:)

2. Replace

  • Add in a digestive enzyme like Vital Chews or Kids Digest to help your child digest protein, dairy, and meat
  • If digestive enzymes produce bloating, your child may have SIBO. Ask for help.
  • Teenagers can have 350 HCL at the beginning of a meal to aid digestion or offer bitters to them.

3.  Reinoculate

  • Add in a high-quality children’s probiotic like Klaire
    • this is safe for infants and up to age 7
  • Wait 2 weeks for the elimination diet or up to 6 weeks.  Adding in a probiotic can give you gas and bloating if you do not remove the allergens first and start with digestive enzymes.
  • Look for probiotics with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria species.
  • For older kids, they can incorporate fermented foods such as miso, sauerkraut, and kimchee 3-4x week.
  • Although very delicious, kombucha can be high in sugar so consider using sparingly.

4. Repair

Include the following supplements for 6-weeks or more to repair your child’s gut.  Dosing depends on your child’s age. The following supplements can be taken for up to 6 months to help to heal the intestinal lining:

  • Tumeric
  • Curcumin
  • Ginger
  • Chamomile Tea
  • Marshmallow root powder
  • DGL licorice (aloe and licorice are not for internal use during pregnancy; these are fine for children) are some of the most effective herbs for healing the gut lining.

Zinc dosing

  • Age 4-7 years old 5-10 mg/day
  • Age 12 10-20 mg/day

Fish oil:

Conclusion

In short, if your child is struggling with food sensitivities and you find you’re avoiding foods, there is hope.  The 4R approach is more than an elimination diet.  The 4R approach can heal your child’s digestive tract, reduce bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation for years to come and reduce their risk of autoimmune disease as well.

How to cure asthma naturally

How to cure asthma naturally

How scary is an asthma attack?

I use to stay up at night, wondering if my son was still breathing and worried with guilt.

“What was I doing wrong?”

Does this sound familiar?

You’ve tried everything for asthma, but have you considered your child’s gut health?

Here’s the thing – these asthma symptoms may have started when your child was young.  Colic, eczema, and seasonal allergies are all contributors of “asthma-like” breathing.

But hang on…

**always use an inhaler as suggested by your doctor and see my precautions below as to when to call the doctor.  Plus, you would never use these remedies with an acute asthma attack. *

So what can you do about asthma?

In this post, I’m going to share how we stopped all our medications for asthma-like breathing by addressing my child’s gut health.

First, what is asthma?

Asthma usually occurs when a substance, that the body sees is a foreign invader creates an overreaction of the body’s own immune system.

During an asthma attack, spasms in the muscles surround the bronchi (small airways in the lungs) constrict and impede the outward passage of air.

Typical symptoms are:

  • coughing
  • wheezing
  • shortness of breathing and chest tightening
  • it can last for a few minutes or several hours
  • always use the medicine suggested by your doctor for an asthma attack

70% of children with allergies also have asthma – Dr. Aviva Romm

What types of asthma are there?

Types of asthma are allergic and non-allergic; although the two often occur together.

Common asthma provoking allergens include:

  • animal dander
  • cockroach droppings – children in city living have higher incidents of asthma
  • pollens
  • mold
  • pet dander
  • chemicals
  • drugs
  • dust mites
  • environmental pollutants – The Amish environment provides protection against asthma. ²
  • feathers
  • food additives
  • seafood
  • dairy products
  • nuts
  • yeast-based foods
  • fumes
  • mold
  • tobacco smoke/fireplace

Factors that trigger nonallergic asthma attacks include:

  • adrenal disorders
  • anxiety
  • temperature changes – cold weather
  • exercise
  • extreme dryness or humidity
  • fear
  • laughing
  • low blood sugar
  • stress
  • viral infection
  • gut health ¹

Gut health & asthma

  • We know children born via C-section have lower levels of healthy gut bacteria likeasthma Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium, and Bacteroides ¹
  • Which can create what’s called gut dysbiosis; the bacteria in your child’s gut becomes unbalanced
  • And.. some moms cannot breastfeed for the suggested 6-9 months and begin adding alternative milk, that does not provide the necessary fatty acids that protect against allergies and asthma
  • This imbalance continues into your child’s early life due to diet {or lack of probiotics} and increased antibiotic use.
  • This gut imbalance has also been connected to eczema
  • Asthma development is also associated with respiratory tract infections when children are young

Asthma Prevention Natural

**Please keep in mind, you should continue to use all medications until you and your pediatrician decide it is safe to come off all medications.**

Step #1 Remove all allergens

  • Has your child been tested for allergies? If so, have you removed all allergens big and small? For example, my son has a small allergy to wheat, dairy, red dye, and cockroaches. The allergist suggested not to remove these foods, but when he eats them his immune system is lower and he gets sick more often.  PLUS, he has a nagging cough.  When he is mostly gluten and dairy-free, he doesn’t have a nagging cough and he thrives with health. So even if the food sensitivity is small, try removing this form your child’s diet.
    • milk and dairy
    • eggs
    • chocolate
    • soy
    • nuts
    • wheat {gluten is linked to nagging cough, see source}
    • corn

Step #2 Reduce Toxins In Your Environment

  • Use a Hepa Air Purifier: A HEPA filter is a type of mechanical air filter; it works by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and tobacco smoke.
  • Use dust covers on pillows and bedding
  • Use natural cleaning products
  • Remove foods from plastic as soon as you get them home
  • Have your child drink out of a stainless steel water cup and clean any straws often
  • Consider a filter for your water system

Step #3 Reduce Stress

  • Encourage herbal teas and wind-down activities- like yoga- to reduce stress

Step #4 Improve Your Child’s Diet

  • Encourage a rainbow of foods or sneak them in with smoothies
  • To support detoxification look for foods with vitamins a, e and c
    • Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin helps the heart, kidneys, and lungs work properly. Vitamin A can be found in:
      • cod liver oil {the #1 source}
      • eggs
      • orange and yellow vegetables
    • Vitamin E supports immune function and reduces inflammation
      • add foods with seeds like sunflower, almonds, peanuts, avocado, and spinach
    • Vitamin C
      • rose hips
      • broccoli, cauliflower and green and red peppers
      • or add 500mg of buffered Vitamin C to reduce exercise-induced asthma

Supplements to reduce asthma attack

  • B6 supplements
  • omega 3 anti-inflammatory reduce air inflammation
    • salmon, sardines, and herring
    • nordic naturals 2x day
  • zinc 5-15 mg day- helps prevent UR infections, higher risk for asthma
    • 100-400mg glycinate day

Step #5 Reduce Medications

  • reduce the need for antibiotics

Step #6 Integrate Botanicals

5 Colic Remedies For Breastfed Babies

5 Colic Remedies For Breastfed Babies

Be honest.

Your colicky baby is driving you mad.

I can relate.  My son had colic, a milk allergy, and reflux and had to sleep inclined for months. It was exhausting.  They actually have correlated PPD with colicky babies. ¹  This was true for us.

What if you could soothe your child so they would sleep more easily?

Imagine what it would be like to have a child who slept and was not in pain.

But don’t forget.  Always check with your doctor before adding anything new to your child’s diet.

Want to get started? In this post, I’ll share how addressing your child’s gut health can reduce the pain from colic.

What is Colic in babies?

colic

Colicky babies follow the rules of three.

  • They typically are 3 months old
  • Cry for 3 hours at a time
  • For at least 3 days a week!

You may notice your baby’s legs are drawn up and your baby seems like they are in pain.  Colic is due to digestion and the pain may be due to excessive gas.

Other symptoms you may notice:

  • Your baby clenches their fists
  • They have a red, flushed face
  • They tighten their stomach muscles
  • They have a bloated tummy

What Causes Colic?

Here’s the thing.  Colic is the start of what’s called an Atopic triad; Eczema, Seasonal Allergies, and Asthma symptoms typically follow children with colic.

Although not completely sure of the cause of Colic, these kids also have higher strains of gut bacteria called Clostridia, which cause gas, bloating and indigestion. ²

And, C-section babies have lower rates of Bifidobacterium-like bacteria and Lactobacillus-like bacteria, compared to vaginal births. ³ Which may affect their digestion.

Here are a series of steps you can try to soothe your colicky baby.

Colic affects up to 28% of infants¹

5 Colic Remedies For Breastfed Babies

#1 Address their gut health

If your child was born via C-section, was formula fed, or has had one round of antibiotics, their gut health may be compromised.  Try an elimination diet for mom if breastfeeding or Hydrolyzed protein formula if your child is bottle-fed. You could also explore goats milk formula as well.  Moms like Holle formula.

In one study,  the infants who received 5 drops of L reuteri each morning 30 minutes before the morning feeding and moms removed dairy from their diet, had a 50% reduction in crying time; compared to the placebo group. ¹

#2 Consider an elimination diet for mom

If you are breastfeeding, mom may consider an elimination diet due to gut dysbiosis; which is the imbalance of the microbial in mom’s gut due to medications, stress, birth or yeast in the gut.

  • For mom: Removing the top allergens: Gluten, and dairy if breastfeeding and consider healing your gut with the 4R approach
  • If your baby is eating – remove gluten and dairy as well in the baby’s diet

#3 Add Lactobacillus to both of your diets

Lactobacillus can break down the sugar and hydrogen gas that is causing the cramping.  I like Klair infant probiotic for baby and Klair Women’s for mom.

# 3 Drink Herbal Teas

Offer your child chamomile tea to aid with digestion or sip on this before breastfeeding to support elimination and gas.

Colic Tea for Babies

Combine equal parts of the following herbs.  Then take 1 tbs. to 1 cup of boiling water.  Cover and let steep for 10 minutes.  Strain, then use a dropper to administer to children throughout the day to soothe gas and belly bloat.

#4 Essential oil for gas {externally}

A relaxing herbal bath can help relax baby and release gas.

  • Add just 1 drop of chamomile essential oil or lavender essential oil to 1/4 cup of milk and add to the tub for baby
  • Alternatively, you could make a strong cup of chamomile tea, cool it and it to the tub as well

Tummy massage

  • Make a calming massage oil by blending 1 drop of essential oil of chamomile or lavender in 1 tsp. of almond oil
  • Massage up the baby’s right side, across the middle and down the left to aid digestion
  • PLEASE USE JUST 1 DROP FOR INFANTS

#5 Consider the 4R approach to heal moms gut from dysbiosis

Homeopathic remedies for colic

I also LOVE using homeopathy with children.  Here are some great remedies for colic.

  • ColocynthisThe child’s belly feels better from firm pressure.  They are cranky and double up and scream with gas pains.
  • Magnesia phosphoricaThe baby wants warmth and gentle pressure on the belly.  The key sign in a warmed bottle over the belly feels better.
  • Bryonia- The baby does not want to be carried, asks for a drink and then doesn’t want it.  Irritable and worse for moving, carrying or jarring. They can’t stand to be moved
  • Chamomilla –The child wants to be carried constantly but that doesn’t help. They cry for water and then don’t want it.  They wine for toys and then throws it away.  Often they have one red check and the other pale.  You cannot please or soothe the child who needs chamomille. The key sign is they calm down more when carried and fuss when put down.

Conclusion

Colic in babies is a sign of too much gas in their belly, due to an imbalance of gut bacteria.  Addressing mom’s and babies’ gut health can stop the pain and allow your baby to be soothed. Drinking herbal teas and integrating homeopathy can aid digestion for both mom and baby and reduce the excessive gas; causing the pain.

Gut Health Eczema Treatment: Prevent a lifetime of allergic disease

Gut Health Eczema Treatment: Prevent a lifetime of allergic disease

It’s frustrating when your little one has eczema.

Did you know, eczema is linked to other respiratory illnesses like asthma later in life?  Even when they outgrow the dry, itchy skin.

Just imagine.. soothing your child naturally and preventing a lifetime of health struggles with herbal remedies.

The interesting part?

These Atopic conditions; colic, seasonal allergies, asthma, and food sensitivities can change by addressing our children’s gut health.

Isn’t that amazing?

**But don’t forget.  Read my precautions below for when to call the doctor and never stop any medical treatment without talking to your doctor first.

It all comes down to this.

We need to address our chid’s gut health to stop the Atopic triad: seasonal allergies, eczema, and asthma.

Are you ready?

Over 30 million Americans have eczema. ¹

Eczema: What causes it?

Children typically develop Eczema in their first year of life and it is triggered by top allergen foods like; milk, eggs, soy, and wheat.

In Chinese medicine, they suggest Eczema is due to the surface of toxic heat from the mother’s uterus.²

**When Eczema is triggered by consumption of peanuts, nuts, or shellfish this suggests a food allergy and you would want to get your child tested. You would NEVER reintroduce a true food allergy into your child’s diet.

There are two ways to address your child’s allergies:

#1 Have your child tested for allergies.

  • Even if it is a small food sensitivity, remove the food that is bothering your child.  Typically, it would be gluten or dairy.  If mom is breastfeeding, she can remove these foods from her diet as well.

#2 Try an elimination diet for 2-4 weeks.

  • Remove gluten and dairy and see if there is a change. {If there is no change, you’ll want to heal your child’s gut with the 4R approach} How do you heal your child’s gut? Read this.

Eczema Symptoms

Eczema is defined as dry or weeping skin; characterized by severe itchy and possibly burning, cracked, or red skin that can blister and ooze when scratched.  Known as Atopic dermatitis, conventional medicine does not see a “cure” for this but, functional medicine doctors and alternative medicine practitioners and are teaching us otherwise.

eczema

Symptoms to look for:

  • Dry, sensitive skin
  • Areas of swelling
  • Oozing
  • Dark-colored patches of skin
  • Rough, leathery or scaly patches of skin
  • Bad itching

Eczema Home Remedies

External Remedies For Eczema

  • If breastfeeding; apply the hindmilk to your child’s itchy skin.  {The hindmilk is the milk at the end of the feeding}
  • Use unscented soaps OR eliminated soap altogether
  • Use 100% cotton clothing
  • Chlorinated water can worsen eczema as well, try a water filter on the shower
  • Keep fingernails cut and clean
  • Make an herb paste out of aloe vera gel alone or with chickweed and calendula
  • Apply an emollient salve made with calendula, comfrey root or plantain topically.  Not internally.
  • Honey and beeswax – Make this combination at home and caution with children under 1 year of age or make this healing salve at home by Wellness Mama
  • Try this Salt Bath for your child

Internal Remedies For Eczema

  • Add a probiotic with Lactobacillus Rhamanosus like Klair infant
  • After 2-4 weeks if you haven’t seen any improvement, follow the 4R approach to heal your child’s gut
  • With your doctor’s approval you can add these herbs:
    • For children over 5 years of age
      • Add 150mg Quercetine 1-2x day to heal the gut.  Klaire Labs is a great company.  Crack open the pill and add it to your child’s drink.
      • Freeze-dried Stinging Nettles acts as a natural anti-histamine
        • Offer 1-2 capsules 2x day to reduce itching and inflammation, I like this company
        • Caution: watch for an allergic response, especially if mom or dad has allergies
  • Try a kitcharee fast for mom or child for 5-10 days
  • Be sure to include essential fatty acids in moms diet, if breastfeeding, and in babies diet if not

What is the 4R approach? Read this post: https://taragregorio.com/how-the-4r-approach-reduces-childrens-food-sensitivities/

Eczema Elimination Diet

The best way to reduce eczema is to practice an elimination diet AND heal your child’s gut – together.

Elimination diets will not work until you heal your child’s gut and address the underlying problem

How do you do an elimination diet?

Step #1 Remove the top allergens your child has.

The foods to remove are:

  • milk
    • If you are breastfeeding, mom can remove these allergens
    • If bottle-feeding try goats milk or hydrolyzed formula
  • eggs
  • soy
  • wheat

Step #2 Add in a Probiotic with Lactobacillus Rhamanosus like Klair infant

Step #3 Follow the 4R approach outlined in this blog post

Step #4 Reduce medications and integrate natural remedies

Step #5 Reduce toxins in your environment

When to call the doctor

  • Always air on the side of caution and trust your momma instincts when your child does not feel well
  • If something doesn’t feel right, go to the ER right away
  • Always use your child’s inhaler; as directed by your doctor
  • TRUE food allergies; need medical care ALWAYS
  • Warning signs for allergic reactions:
    • blue lips
    • difficulty breathing or speaking
    • change in voice
    • swelling of lips and tongue
    • exposure to true food allergy
    • fainting, weakness, severe abdominal pain
    • as well as.. high fevers and screaming sore throats {sign of Strep}

Conclusion

Eczema in children is a result of poor gut health caused during pregnancy {moms gut health}, by birth {higher in C-section babies} and if your child has had medications in the first few months of their lives.  Addressing your child’s gut health will get to the root cause of itchy, dry skin.

7 Supplements Your Child Needs To Reduce Allergies

7 Supplements Your Child Needs To Reduce Allergies

Let me guess.. your little one has allergies.

Have you ever noticed the dark circles under their eyes? Skin flare-ups? Constipation or headaches? It’s worrisome, I know.

Imagine if you could clear up these symptoms with diet and supplements.  I know, I’m not a fan of supplements either, but the truth is our food is not what it use to be and you must admit – your child’s diet is not the best.

Here’s the thing.  It all begins with their gut health. Hard to believe, right?

But don’t forget, we can reverse these symptoms and reduce further complications like occurrences of ear and sinus infections and even “asthma-life” symptoms – when we address their gut health. ¹

Yes, when we suppress Eczema and Allergies, your child may develop “Asthma-like” symptoms.

My son began his life with milk intolerance and as he grew, I noticed he had a gluten intolerance as well.  When we addressed his gut health – his symptoms changed.

So what can you do about it?

Here’s my promise to you. By the end of this post, you’ll understand how to reduce your child’s allergic response – naturally.

What is an allergy anyway?

When your child’s immune system reacts to a foreign substance – like an insect bite, pets dander or cockroaches, their immune system produces a substance called Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies.  These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction or inflammation.

This inflammation can be as little as red, rosy cheeks or as severe as anaphylaxis – a potentially life-threatening emergency.

Why allergies are bad right now

*While most food allergies cannot be cured, you will see an enormous change in your child’s health and symptoms when you address these 7 things:

  1. Your child’s gut health
  2. Reducing inflammation naturally with herbs, diet & supplements
  3. Boosting their immunity with supplements
  4. Removing any food sensitivities to reduce inflammation*
  5. Promoting healthy evacuation
  6. Avoid medications and antibiotics – this affects their gut health
  7. Reducing toxins in their environment and food

What are the types of allergies?

  1. Insect sting
  2. Pet dander
  3. Drug
  4. Mold
  5. Cockroach droppings- This is the #1 cause of breathing trouble with children in the city
  6. Hay fever

What are the top food allergies in children?

A food allergy produces an increase in IgE and possible anaphylactic shock. **You would NEVER re-introduce these foods into your child’s diet if they have a true food allergy to them.

Food Sensitivity is when your child’s digestive system is triggered.  An elimination diet is the gold standard way to discover which foods bother your child and may even be causing behavioral problems. But, it will not “fix” the symptoms.

By integrating the 4R approach to reduce inflammation, you may notice fewer allergic responses and asthma attacks.  If your child has a food sensitivity (not a food allergy!), you could re-introduce the food into their diet again or may keep it out for good.

What are the top food allergens?

  1. Wheat
  2. Dairy
  3. Eggs
  4. Soy
  5. Crustaceans
  6. Fish
  7. Tree Nuts
  8. Peanuts

Food Allergy Symptoms

  • Tingling in the mouth
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat
  • Hives
  • Anaphylaxis²

Food Sensitivity Symptoms

  • behavioral problems (dairy, wheat)
  • chronic belly aches, gas, bloating
  • dark circles under their eyes (dairy)
  • acne on the back of their arms (gluten)
  • bed wetting
  • chronic sinus and ear infections (dairy)
  • hearing problems (occasionally accidentally diagnosed as ADHD)
  • headaches
  • sniffles
  • swollen lymph nodes & more
  • colic
  • chronic cough (gluten)

Take the gut health questionnaire below to see if your child is at risk.

Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, can cause:

  • Sneezing
  • Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth
  • Runny, stuffy nose
  • Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)

Remember food is always the best source of vitamins and minerals.

The top 9 foods to add to your child’s diet to reduce inflammation include:

  • green leafy vegetables
  • organic purple fruits
  • fiber
  • probiotics
  • Tumeric
  • B vitamins: eggs, poultry, and lentils
  • Chlorella: sea vegetables
  • Culinary herbs to support detox: garlic and onion

7 Supplements To Reduce The Allergic Response

#1 Freeze-Dried Stinging Nettles

You may know stinging nettles as those prickly greens that bite you in the springtime.  Personally, I find the sting invigorating and as a sign of warm weather to come, but many hate the sting.  The hairs – and the sting – on the nettles reduce when the greens are cooked. “Mast cells are where histamine is formed, stored, and released. So by preventing their breakdown, they act as a natural antihistamine.”²

For children: you can break open one of the capsules and add it to a shake or drink

#2 Quercetin

Quercetin is a plant pigment (flavonoid). It is found in many plants and foods, such as red wine, onions, green tea, apples, berries, Ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort, American elder, and others.

Quercetin has been shown to reduce inflammation and inhibit histamine release; reducing allergic response.  ³

#3 Curcumin

Curcumin was reported to have an anti-allergic property with an inhibitory effect on histamine release from the mast cells. Naturally found in Turmeric, you can add this orange spice to your little one’s hot chocolate or orange juice.

#4 Digestive Enzyme

My favorite supplement company is Enzymedica.  In this post, they explain how digestive enzymes can help reduce the allergic response. The enzymes help break down protease, amylase, and lipase – aiding digestion and breaking down proteins, a common irritant. We love this product for my son.

#5 Probiotic

Probiotics can help heal the gut, which can be the source of many inflammatory diseases – including allergies. Look for ones with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species for healthy immunity. Download the gut health questionnaire to see if your child is experiencing the symptoms associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome.

#6 Butterbur

This one supplement was life-changing for us! My son was diagnosed with “asthma-like” symptoms and went home with over four prescription drugs. We love Little Davinci Migrashield.  Please choose a supplement that is PA-free.

Diet + Xlear + Butterbur helped him become symptom-free! I cover more of this in my online course Home Remedies For Children.

“In one study of 125 individuals with allergies,  it has been found to be as effective in relieving allergic rhinitis as Zyrtec to relieve symptoms of tearing, itchy, and red eyes associated with seasonal allergies.”-  Dr. Aviva Romm

# 7 Grapefruit Seed Extract- Xlear

Nasal rinses have been used for years to clean out the pollen in your nasal passages.  This blend uses grapefruit seed extract; which is known to treat and prevent infections.  This combined with the butterbur- has helped my son reduce his “asthma-like” nagging cough.

Conclusion:

When your child is struggling with a food sensitivity or allergy,  you’ll want to address their gut health.  By reducing inflammation and the inflammatory response, you can reduce the symptoms your child is experiencing and boost their health.  Remember, you would never re-introduce a true food allergy to your child’s diet.
